New NorthShore Cardiovascular Institute to Deliver Enhanced Access to World-Class Expertise and Patient Care Close to Home

Glenview complex uniquely positions NorthShore as a singular regional destination for personalized, advanced cardiac and vascular care

Glenview, Illinois – NorthShore University HealthSystem (NorthShore) today received approval from the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board to build a new, state-of-the-art Cardiovascular Institute (CVI) complex on NorthShore’s Glenbrook Hospital campus in Glenview. The project aligns with NorthShore’s commitment to community-connected care, recognizing the growing need for cardiovascular care that is centralized and easily accessible throughout the region.

“Our vision is to be the first choice for patients, families and providers in the communities we serve for the delivery of high-quality, personalized cardiovascular care,” said Gregory Mishkel, MD, Chief, Division of Cardiology and Co-Director, CVI. “This project will be the platform to further enhance the quality of care delivered, optimize patient outcomes, provide the latest innovative and customized treatment options and foster research. Equally important is our desire to broaden patient access. My colleagues and I firmly believe that expanding our CVI program is a vital component to addressing the increasing cardiovascular needs of the communities we serve.”

The new facility will serve as NorthShore’s central hub for elective cardiac and vascular procedures, catheterizations and interventions, as well as structural heart procedures and electrophysiology studies. The planned 167-thousand square-foot complex will house six new dedicated operating rooms and nine new labs for multiple cardiovascular needs. Glenbrook was chosen as the Institute’s new home based on its central location within NorthShore’s overall service area including easy access to Interstate 294, and existing land to build on the hospital campus. Construction on the CVI complex is expected to begin in early 2022 with estimated completion by the end of calendar year 2023.

“Our new heart center will further promote interdisciplinary care by enhancing the opportunity for clinicians to practice alongside one another, and in the process, improve the patient experience, physician retention and recruitment,” said Hyde M. Russell, MD, Chief, Division of Cardiac Surgery and Co-Director, CVI. “Our expanded program will offer minimally invasive therapies, which are fundamental to a patient’s quick return to independent living, activity and wellness; and also significant investment in rapidly evolving technologies to help meet patient needs.”

In addition to serving as home to the new CVI, Glenbrook Hospital will continue to be a general medical/surgical hospital, providing non-cardiovascular perioperative procedures and full Emergency Department capabilities.
