Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a disease that causes your bones to weaken. There are a number of similar conditions that affect your bones’ density, strength and composition. Screenings are available and highly recommended for those over 65 as well as those with a history of osteoporosis in their family. Risk Factors

Older age
Family history of osteoporosis
Low body weight and small body frame
Calcium and vitamin D deficiencies

Smoking
Level of alcohol consumption
Sedentary lifestyle
Northern European or Asian descent

Symptoms

Early on, there are no immediate symptoms, but as bone density decreases, you may experience the following:

Back pain, caused by a fractured or collapsed vertebra
Loss of height over time
A stooped posture
A bone fracture that occurs much more easily than expected
