The latest technologies for accurate diagnoses

At the Breast Center, NCH’s experienced radiologists, oncologists and nurses have access to the latest technological advances for early detection and treatment of the first signs of breast cancer. These include:

  • Full-screen digital mammography—Allows data to be stored on a computer and enhanced or manipulated for thorough evaluation
  • ImageChecker® CAD (computer aided detection) system —Minimizes false negative readings during mammograms and enhances accuracy when reading mammograms
  • Comfortable screenings for full-figured women—Allows women with larger breasts to receive more comfortable mammograms with an expanded detector area
  • Extra Gentle Mammogram technology—Makes mammography more comfortable for patients with sensitive breasts. Call 847.618.5800 and ask to speak with a breast nurse navigator
  • Breast ultrasound—Helps radiologists determine if an area contains a fluid-filled cyst or a solid mass for the diagnosis of breast disease.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)—Provides additional information about abnormal tissue
  • Advanced breast biopsy options —Provide more choices for the best diagnosis method, including ultrasound-guided, MRI-guided and stereotactic breast biopsy, as well as intact breast excisional biopsies
  • Accelerated partial breast irradiation (APBI)—Allows more breast cancer patients to conserve their breasts and avoid mastectomies. Reduces radiation therapy time from seven weeks to five days using a small balloon catheter
  • Breast-specific gamma imaging (BSGI)—Provides a diagnostic imaging option that gives clearer results for women with dense breast tissue
  • Positron emission tomography (PET)—Provides additional information about abnormal tissue and helps evaluate the progress of treatment therapies
